Owen out for a year
MICHAEL Owen will be sidelined for at least a year after his horrific World Cup knee injury. The distraught striker flew home from Germany yesterday after confirmation that he had ruptured his cruciate ligament in his right knee, and damaged his medial ligaments.
As fears grew that Owen’s career could be in jeopardy, Newcastle were ready to launch a £25m compensation claim with FIFA via the FA.
But skipper David Beckham tried to cheer Owen up by saying "We’ll go on and win it for Michael."
The FA’s insurers face a £6m bill for his wages while Owen is out. After virtually six months off with a broken foot, Owen now faces a huge battle to get back to the level which has seen him score 36 goals for his country.
Beckham was gutted for his former Real Madrid pal and said: "Without a doubt we want to win it for him. We all feel for him but we’re going to have to go on without him.
"Goals are going to have to come from everywhere now. It doesn’t look good with Michael but let’s hope he’ll be back scoring for England ASAP.
"We must make sure this isn’t a reason for us to go out of the tournament."
Owen put on a brave face, but is privately devastated. He said: "As soon as it happened, I knew I was in trouble. I’ll go back and work with the Newcastle medical staff to put a recovery programme in place.
"I’m sorry to be leaving the lads in Germany, but I’m convinced they can achieve success. I’ll be cheering them all the way."
Owen has started only 10 games for Newcastle since his £17m move from Real Madrid last summer.
The club will receive compensation from the FA towards Owen’s wages and chairman Freddy Shepherd wisely took extra insurance to cover any injury to him but was still shocked and angry.
He said: "I was watching the TV and I nearly vomited when it happened. We’ve just got him fit to play for England and this happens after a couple of games – now we’re left to pick up the pieces.
"But in fairness to the FA, I got a call from Brian Barwick the morning after the game.
"The FA have a level of compensation which means they pay a certain amount of the wages."
He added: "Newcastle will be seeking legal advice with a view to claiming compensation from FIFA through the FA, one of its member bodies.
"It is their tournament and England have our players there. If someone borrowed a tool from me and it came back damaged I’d want compensating for it. I’d want it replacing.
"It is unbelievable that they can get away with this. Someone has to pay."
Asked what Newcastle would demand, subject to legal advice, he added: "The fee we paid for Michael, his wages, the insurance we had to pay to cover his wages, and the cost of a replacement."
That could be well over £25m. 天才末路啊。。。。 我觉得lahm也快完了,,要么受伤,要么比赛中出现重大失误................................. 原帖由 PSP 于 2006-6-22 14:28 发表
