SCOTLAND

Scotland, located at the western shore of the North Sea, is perhaps a name that most tourists are familiar with. It is not my first time to visit this country. Still, there are a lot of things to be discovered. The mixture of the lively city atmosphere and purity of nature makes Scotland unique. Within seven days, my husband and I tour around Edinburgh, Glasgow, Loch Lomond and Inverness. Edinburgh's dynamic urban ambience and Loch Lomond's beauty of nature impress me most.

Edinburg
Our trip starts from London's King Cross Station on a Sunday morning. The inter-city train, GNER, takes around four hours and forty minutes to arrive at Edinburgh's Waverley Station. Although the train journey is a bit long, we enjoy various super views of the Scottish seashore. The well-linked transport network may be one of the reasons why this city is always flooded with tourists.

Bed & Breakfast (B&B) in Edinburg is generally more expensive than other areas in Scotland. A B&B near to the city centre is never cheap. Don't be shocked, if you get a price quotation between 35 to 50 pounds per person per night for a moderate accommodation. Fortunately, B&B s ranging from 25 to 30 pounds per person are still available along Dalkeith Road. It is just a 10-minute drive from city centre. Bus service is frequent there. With a Daysaver ticket that costs 2.2 pounds or 1.5 pounds after 9:30am, you are entitled to jump into any bus in Edinburgh for a day.

During our stay in Edinburgh, we manage to visit a few attractions. Edinburgh Castle, one end of Old Town's Royal Mile, is worth visiting. In addition to presenting tourists the history of Edinburgh, the castle is the ideal place to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. The tiny St. Margaret Chapel, the castle's oldest fragment, witnesses Edinburgh's ups and downs. Besides being open to visitors, the chapel still serves as a romantic wedding venue for many military officials.

Following the path of Royal Mile, we reach the countryside of the city, Holyrood Park, which situates behind the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Lying on the meadow, watching various colourful kites flying in the light blue sky, dogs joyfully running across the green and observing a baby bravely setting his steps on the ground do remind me that there is not only hustle and bustle in life. Instead of filling our daily schedules fully with work, perhaps we should take some time to enjoy the beautiful snapshots that surround us. Making a picnic in this park may also be a good idea.

Whenever the prices are reasonable, trying local foods is always the item included in my travel agenda. Yet I do not expect my discovery of Scottish foods starts in the first morning. I order a full breakfast in a teahouse where local people also go. In fact, the Scottish breakfast is more or less the same as the English one, which you can find egg, toast, sausage and bacon. Instead of putting beans on the plate, the Scots replace them with black pudding, a kind of blood sausage. As I am not totally awake, I am really shocked to see 'something burnt' on my plate. Only after asking a waitress what it is, I put it into my mouth with scepticism.

My adventure of trying local dishes continues in the evening. Stepping into a bar, my husband and I order home-made steak and ale pie, as well as haggis, the national cuisine that serves beefs with mashed turnip and potato. Even though haggis is not the best food that I have ever had, why not give it a try when I am in Scotland!

Loch Lomond
Having been working in cities for years, the business area, like Glasgow, does not really catch much of our attention. Glasgow is therefore just a transit point, where we rent a car, to direct to Loch Lomond. We make Balloch, the southern part of the lake, our base.

The 38km-long and 13 km-wide Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Scotland. It is also the major water supply to the people in Edinburg.

To explore the beauty of Loch Lomond, we sail along the coast; drive up till Arduli, the north end of the loch. At last, we finish our day with a lochside walk along the eastern trail.

The boat trip does not last long, just around an hour. This hour is unexpectedly enjoyable. Soaking myself under the warm sun and sea breeze, seeing various castles and colourful small houses, that plot on both sides of the loch, coming close to me, I nearly believe that I am in a fairy-tale.

'The loch is so big. Sailing along the coast just gives us a glimpse of the lake. Why don't we have a closer look of its western side?' I say to my husband. With the burning curiosity, we jump into the car immediately. Along the way (A82), we make every possible stop. In Luss, part of the coast is occupied by kids who learn canoeing. Inverbeg's peacefulness attracts a family to have picnic and rest in the park. Tarbet is packed with tourists. Even though Loch Lomond is visited by numerous tourists every year, the nature keeps unspoiled surprisingly.

To fully enjoy the day, my husband and I continue our Lochside walk after a tea-break. Once you see Loch Lomond in the sunset, you will surely love it. Swans slowly swimming in the lake and people leisurely walking create a super panorama. Balloch Castle in the shadow of the sun reminds people the glory of its good old days.

Although I just stop in Loch Lomond for a day, its peacefulness, charm and pureness remain in my mind always. With all these beautiful memories, we drive on to Inverness, where we regret staying too short.
