Team Leader - Computational Infrastructures & Applications
* Job Role: Biology, Maths & IT, Computational Biology
* Job Hours: Full-Time
* Sector: Academic
* Location: Germany
* Company: European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)
* Salary:
* Job reference: NS/09/071
* Posted Date: 02 September 2009 15:07:17
EMBL is building an integrated facility in structural biology at the new PETRA-3 synchrotron ring at DESY, Hamburg. The optical properties of PETRA-III will allow the operation of world-class synchrotron radiation beamlines from 2010/11, providing an ideal research environment for future challenges in structural biology. The EMBL@PETRA3 facility will include three beamlines with applications in biological macromolecular crystallography and small angle X-ray scattering, state-of-the-art equipment for sample preparation, including a facility for high-throughput crystallization, and an infrastructure for data interpretation. In addition, EMBL-Hamburg is providing software packages for applications in structural biology, either via downloading or as remote computational services, to the research community. The main duties of the team leader will be:
• To develop, implement and provide novel software and associated infrastructures that are relevant to the research activities in structural biology at EMBL-Hamburg.
• To develop and implement access to remote experiments, particularly for the synchrotron beamlines at PETRA-3 and the crystallisation facility.
• To lead and manage the local computer group at EMBL-Hamburg.
• To actively cooperate with the research groups at EMBL-Hamburg.
• To administer and further develop the local network, database administration, web services and computer environment using state-of-the-art technologies.
• To supervise and actively participate in the installation, maintenance and development of software applications for the outstation’s scientific user support facilities, advanced training activities and current research projects.
• To further develop a user-friendly scientific computing environment, which is dependent upon excellent communication with a diverse, international scientific community.
• To actively cooperate with the IT groups from other EMBL Units and DESY.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, a strong record in computational research, preferably with structural biology-oriented applications, project management, high level scientific/technical accomplishments, excellent communication skills, very good command of English, and ability to supervise and collaborate with international teams. Previous experience in Unix administration is essential. Substantial experience in WindowsNT and/or MacOS management is required as well.
An initial contract of 5 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
To apply, please email preferably as a single pdf-file: a cover letter, CV and a concise description of previous achievements & future plans, quoting NS/09/071 in the subject line, by clicking the Apply Now button below. Please also arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be emailed to: references@embl.de
