Bitcoin usage stats for the Bitcoin Black Friday sale on reddit gold
Bitcoin / 14 Std. später
I posted some stats about general Bitcoin usage for reddit gold payments way back in April 2013, but since we had a 25% off sale as part of Bitcoin Black Friday I thought I'd post an update about how the sales on that day were compared to the usual.
So as a baseline, here's the breakdown for the previous month leading up to the Black Friday sale. Note that the Google Payments numbers are going to be very low because we removed Google Payments as one of our payment options on November 12, so it wasn't possible to use for over half of this period. "Usage %" is what percentage of the total number of purchases were made using that payment method, and "Revenue %" is what percentage of total revenue came from that payment method (these don't necessarily match up because some purchases are for multiple months or years at once).
reddit gold purchases Oct 29 - Nov 29
Payment Processor Usage % Revenue %
PayPal 67.58% 64.38%
Stripe (direct CC) 26.88% 26.95%
Coinbase (BTC)3.17% 2.69%
Balanced (cc via redditgifts) 1.88% 2.86%
Google Payments 1.48% 2.64%
And then here's the purchases over the first 24 hours of the sale (started midnight Eastern time Nov 29). We kept the sale running for longer than just Black Friday itself, but these are the numbers from just the first 24 hours.
reddit gold purchases on Nov 29 (Eastern time)
Payment Processor Usage % Revenue %
Coinbase (BTC) 31.21% 46.30%
PayPal 41.32% 28.40%
Stripe (direct CC) 21.60% 18.15%
Balanced (cc via redditgifts) 5.87% 7.16%
So overall it was a pretty impressive showing from Bitcoin, and I think a lot of it was due to this popular post in /r/Bitcoin. And as a nice bonus, it also resulted in the server-name voting from Black Friday selecting the name "Satoshi" for one of our servers. Thanks for the support!
