Halle - the town
…is the largest in the regional state of Saxony-Anhalt
Its approximately 240 000 inhabitants and administrative area of 135 km² make Halle the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and fourth largest in the East of Germany. The city lies on the banks of the river Saale and is fortunate in its transport connections: the Leipzig/Halle airport, the junction of the A9 and A14 motorways (superhighways), Intercity rail connections, the port on the Saale at Trotha.

In Handel's birthplace there is much to hear (the Handel Festival, the festival for children's choirs), to celebrate (the Lantern and Salt festivals), to see (the State Gallery in the Moritzburg, the old city cemetry, the buildings housing Francke's foundations, the Dom church, the library of the Marienkirche), as well as performances to enjoy (the Opera House, four theatres and a variety theatre).

Situated in the Mitteldeutschland region of Germany, with its rich industrial traditions, Halle and Leipzig, only 38 km (24 miles) away from the nucleus of a wide area constituting an economic metropolis, in which service industries and technology centres predominate. A considerable number of scientific institutions are also located in Halle. The best known local products are Hallorenkugel chocolates, Kathi cake mix and railway rolling stock built at Ammendorf.

There are over 71 km² of water and greenery within the city boundaries. 124 sports clubs with facilities in 63 places as well as five sets of tennis courts are available.One can also, however, spend free time delightfully in the zoo, the botanical garden, at the race course, on the Peissnitz island in the Saale, along the banks of the river or in one of the five cinemas. |
