Yes, I did a disk dump on a new partition on the new hd. But why is the bios using one or the other hd? It looks first for a floppy and then for a hd. I can´t boot from a dvd. My bios is 6 .My bios is 6 years in without an update. I may try to copy and delete the mbr. Never done this before.  

hmm, wenn Du nur die Partitionen anstatt den ganzen Platten gedumpt hast,wurde der MBR an sich nicht ueberschrieben. Mir scheint, wie gesagt, dass die Anordnungen der Platten auf Bus, warum auch immer, gelegentlich durcheinander kommt. Das ist sehr ungewoehnlich. Wie sind denn deine Platten angeschlossen, IDE, SATA oder SCSI? Ein moegliches Szenario: Angenommen, beide Platten sind Master auf jeweiligen IDE BUS, also /dev/hda und /dev/hdc. Sagen wir deine Linux Rootpartition ist auf der ersten Platte die erste Partition, also /dev/hda1. Diese Partition wurde aber als die zweite Partition der Backupplatte kopiert, sprich /dev/hdc2. Falls der BIOS beim Booten die Platten falsch zuorndet, also /dev/hda und /dev/hdc vertauscht. Dann befindet sich die Linuxpartition ploetzlich auf /dev/hda2 und /dev/hdc1. Ergo keine Chance fuer den Kernel, der sich in /dev/hda1 doom und daemlich sucht, das Rootfs zu finden. Falls die Partitionzuordnungen auf deinen Platten aber identisch sind, dann steckt das Problem noch woanders.  Kannst Du denn die root Partition auf deiner Backupplatte auch mounten?

doch doch bin ich. Noch nicht mal ein 香蕉人. :D  Bin aber irgendwie einfach zu doof fuers 智能拼音 und brauche immer ewig, chinesisch zu schreiben....$汗$ Abgesehen davon, kenne ich die chinesische Uebersetzungen fuer die meisten IT/EDV relevanten Begriffe leider nicht. $汗$

Bios shows prim master: hd, slave: dvd-rom,   sec. master: cd-rw, slave: the new hd,   
GParted shows: ATA Drives for both hds,    new hd: /dev/hdd = 3 partions, /dev/hdd1, 2, und 3 ext3, no mountpoints, This is the situation today.
I don´t know if Ubuntu is booting sometimes one or the other system. They should be exactly the same. I don´t mind if Ubuntu is booting the backup system.  But I saw 2 partions of the new hd mounted on /media/disk and media/disk1, at this, GParted showed, the first partion has no mountpoint and is partly not to read. I guess this is the old system, because it sets mountpoints and writes to certain folders.
At this moment, I will not mount or use the new hd. Not enough time and patience.$汗$
