LZ我想说的是，上下文对于语义的理解至关重要。特地去谷歌了下原文，发现你居然还只是引用了后半句话！

如果略去- if for no other reason, to resist against them - ，那么原句很好理解。

if for no other reason直译的话意思是“如果不是其他原因的话”。这里插入语的them指的是前半句话里面说的some instances。作者这里是想说，“让我们姑且假设”，“这后半句里说的other instances是为了抵制前半句里说的some instances”。
